02: BLOOM TO DEATH

My junior collection focuses on the the concept of "death bloom" within monocarpic plants, a phenomenon in which the plant will produce one final extravagant bloom that uses all of it's energy before it dies. This final bloom covers the decaying plant underneath it, almost acting as a cover for it's true identity.

IDEATION

I related the concept of the death bloom to the concept of aging garden statues, and the idea that everything will return to the natural world. I created a small collection of three looks, that showcase an aging statue of a woman when she was first created to when she has been overtaken by the natural world around her.

INSPIRATION

I found the connections between the death bloom and the man made statues of women that exist within some of the most famous gardens in the world to be beautiful. The way in which the intricately carved stone crumbles from the forces of nature and the vines growing through it is a beautiful reminder that everything returns to nature, even the elements that are natural to begin with, in the case of the death bloom. I utilized the overgrown statue concept as my visual inspiration, and I related the color scheme of each look to that of which is displayed in both overgrown stone sculptures, as well as exquisitely blooming monocarpic plants.

FINAL PRESENTATION

I chose to shoot the photos for this collection in an area that I grew up in, and I was able to have my childhood best friend model each look. I photographed these looks in two ways, one of which being in an area that was overgrown itself, to match the theme of the collection, and the other being in a setting that is less overgrown, so that the look is the highlight. This collection holds an immense amount of emotion for me, as it was a way for me to break out of some boundaries I had put on myself and try something completely new and different in regards to my designs.
